Butet Manurung, with her book The Jungle School

She is well known. Not only in Indonesia, but arguably in an international arena.

She receives a number of awards, the prestigious ones. Some of them: UNESCO’s “Man and Biosphere Award” in 2001; TIME Magazine’s “Hero of Asia” in 2004; World Economic Forum’s “Young Global Leader” in 2009.

She is Butet Manurung, widely known with her initiative on SOKOLA, the jungle school.

Projecting Indonesia is pleased to meet her at a recent event in ANU’s campus, Canberra, where she talked before the Australia’s national poets’ organisation.

For those who need to refresh themselves on this amazing lady, simply saying, she is an Indonesian educator and activist. The event she attended at the ANU is part of her effort to promote her phenomenal book “Sokola Rimba” that has recently been translated into English: “The Jungle School”.

Referring to the media release of the above-mentioned event, Butet developed a love of the outdoors while earning her degrees in anthropology and Indonesian literature from Padjadjaran University, Bandung, Indonesia.

In 1999, Butet joined the conservation NGO, WARSI, to lead their educational program for the Orang Rimba, the People of the Forest, in Jambi. Her work in the jungle evolved into co-founding SOKOLA, a non-profit organisation providing educational opportunities for marginalised people in remote areas of Indonesia.

Thus for the Indonesian diaspora and international community who wish to learn more on what Butet has been doing and why she deserves the prestigious awards such as from UNESCO, TIME Magazine and the World Economic Forum, the launch of her book in English must have been much welcomed.

One of the most touchy parts, which might have determined Butet’s decision to run the Sokola, can be read from the Chapter 5.

Butet writes, “….one of the children, Batu, approaches me and says, “Ibu beri kami Sokola!” (Ibu, give us a school!). These words sound so beautiful.”

Furthermore, “Uh…What?! I am shocked at this straightforward request. It is happening too fast.”

And the story goes on, which later will become history, not only for Butet, but unquestionably for Indonesia: the establishment of SOKOLA, the jungle school.

Projecting Indonesia is convinced that many will be much eager to get and read the book as soon as possible. To add more excitement, all the results of the book sales will be donated to the Sokola, the school that Butet has been running for years.

In other words, readers will not only be inspired, but they too can contribute something. Something meaningful for the people of forest that has been cared most by Butet. (YA, from various sources)
